On 5min Grey Bloem fullback Henry Immelman goes for a penalty over 65m out. He misses but gets serious distance out of strike.
6min: Paul Roos open the scoring via a counter attack during which Herschel Jantjies makes telling contributions, especially with memorable improvised snap pass between his legs to find a teammate and keep the momentum. It eventually results in no.8 Michael Meyer crossing for the try. 5-0.
10min. Paul Roos increase their lead by going through the phases and once the penalty is secured flyhalf Aidynn Cupido slots a drop goal. 8-0.
14min. Grey press with sustained attack. Centre Julian Jordaan adds a penalty. 8-3.
15min. Serious hang-time on the kickoff by Cupido allows his left wing to jump and contest for the aerial ball. He is unintentionally taken out in the air by Grey no.8 Alex Jonker and falls badly. Fortunately for Grey it’s just a penalty which Cupido misses.
19min. A Grey lineout goes wrong. Paul Roos collect ball but swift response and a perfect body position over the tackled ball by Grey scrummy Dian Badenhorst results in a penalty for his team. Immelman succeeds with a massive kick at goal. 8-6.
22min. This time after a Paul Roos lineout, centre Edrich Venter is tackled low and its Grey opensider De Wet Bezuidenhout who crouches low over the ball and wins a holding penalty for his team. The outcome is the same. Immelman’s huge boot easily clears the crossbar. Grey leads for the first time at 9-8.
29min. Grey College use a midfield barge after another PRG lineout gone wrong to initiate an offensive. Quickball our right has wing Glenn Erickson in space. He chips over the top and along with teammate Jordaan appear to have won the foot-race to the goalline in pursuit of the bouncing ball. Neither is however able to collect cleanly and knock-on is the saving call for a relieved Paul Roos.
32min. Paul Roos cannot clear the redzone danger and lose a ball turnover after the ball is not controlled at the back of their scrum feed. Ill-disciplined play by a Grey player after the whistle comes to the visitors rescue.

Halftime Grey College 12 – 8 Paul Roos. Paul Roos started brightly but its Grey who up the tempo and end the half strongest. The game lacks precision at times but its still an absorbing match.
36min. Paul Roos look to have been robbed of a try after a turnover and useful build up work. Paul Roos got to the tryline where scrumhalf Calvin Nel backed himself to go in under the posts. The referee was badly positioned at the crucial moment and did not see the grounding. No try! Instead an earlier penalty to PRG for offsides is upheld and Cupido slots the easy kick. 12-11.
44min. Grey College scores a beaut of a try. An electric step by flyhalf Dwayne Wessels is the catalyst. He has a good run to within the oppositions’ 22m and finds support in the form of powerful mobile flank De Wet Bezuidenhout. The speed from there on never allows Paul Roos to reorganise defensively and ball through the hands out to the right has an unmarked Immelman going in untouched. 17-11.
48min. Paul Roos turns defence into attack with good tackling. Cupdio makes the penalty count. 17-14.
49min. A poor PRG clearance gives Immelman to carry back from just over halfway. He kicks and chases. Paul Roos fullback Taljaard does ever so well to clear the danger. However from the lineout Grey hit their visitors with meaning. First Bezuidenhout and then Jonker make big contributions. The pressure results in a penalty which Jordaan easily gets over. 20-14.
52min. Paul Roos are fighters. They bounce right back by winning the ball at the kickoff setpiece and creating the field position to land a penalty via Cupido, awarded for a ruck side-entry penalty.
60min. Paul Roos don’t clear the damage first and later their short throw to the front of the lineout is skew. It’s Grey ball in a good position. Grey use a bit of midfield decoy work to hide their intention to get the ball wide on the left to Immelman. The illusive fullback has precious little room to work in but aided by some very ordinary defending by his marker, Immelman’s ability to stay on his feet coupled with is speed, step and pure determination sees him get in for a crucial try for Grey. 25-17.
63min. Paul Roos wins a penalty and Cupido increases his contribution to 15 points. 25-20.

68min Paul Roos hit the ball up with a series of pop and first receiver drives. The recycling is good and they free up space on the left. Paul Roos are one pass away from scoring when player of the match Immelman comes up with a crucial wrap up tackle.
70min. One last chance sees Paul Roos wing Edwill van der Merwe put into space on the right. He has a good gallop with support arriving on the inside but steps into touch to end the game.
Final score : Grey College 25 – 20 Paul Roos
What an exciting match. Wonderful game to watch.
38 buses have been hired to transport Paul Roos sportsmen and officials from Stellenbosch up to Grey College in Bloemfontein. The annual season-ending inter-schools between the two schools is huge. It’s also not often that the national 1st XV rankings number 1 place gets decided by the outcome of a last game of the season involving two of the top ranked teams.
If Grey wins the 1st XV match, there will be no disputing their claim to the number 1 school rugby team in South Africa for 2014. However if Paul Roos causes an upset, bearing in mind that Grey’s home ground has proven to be the hardest ground for any school 1st XV to win on during the last decade, then brace yourself for have the great debate, similar to the one that unfolded last year when both Affies and Paarl Gim went through their respective seasons unbeaten. Garsfontein also stands a chance of factoring into this 2014 debate over who should have the honour of being regarded as SA’s best schoolboy rugby team, if they can overcome Nelspruit, their Achilles’ heel team of the last couple of seasons, in the prestigious Beeld Trofee Macro School’s final, to be played on Saturday 23 August as well.
As important as the 1st XV match is regarded, the Grey College versus Paarl Roos inter-school’s is about a lot more than just that one game. The two rugby powerhouse schools compete across the board in a variety of sports as well as the brain-power related challenges of chess, debating and maths. Cycling, golf, hockey, squash, tennis, table-tennis and waterpolo are the listed sports.
Here is a rugby comparative of age group scores by Paul Roos and Grey College against HJS Paarl Boys High.
(Note that Paul Roos played HJS at home while Grey traveled to the Boland to face HJS, so this is not the ideal basis but is the only one available.)
