  1. There seems to be a ‘lack’ of big derbies for next year. Especially between the traditional rugby schools. Also seems like Helpies got ‘welcomed’ into Wildeklawer with 2 games to settle them and not test them after a big season this year. We are all looking forward to the Dreamteam making their debut next year. Paarl Gim vs Grey is my game of the tournament at this stage.

  2. @Grasshopper: Traditional rugby schools, not traditional derbies – Grey, Monnas, Affies, Paarl Gim, Boishaai. It does however make every game very interesting in that there are many upsets possible.
    @Rugbyman: Dankie.

  3. Looking at different rankings Dale College is the biggest absentee at Wildeklawer. If they were there the top 15 would all have been there.

  4. Now for part 2 of my comments. At 1st glance it seems like mostly 1 sided matchups for most games. However if you look at the performance of the participating teams over the past 3 years then there are so many new big teams on the block that many games on WK are between top 10 schools. The pressure is still on the big name teams. Monnas plays Oakdale and Boland. Based on traditional results Monnas should be favourites for someone not keeping up to date with SBR the past 3 years but the reality is that those 3 teams were ranked 5, 6 and 7 this year.
@Grasshopper: New schools on the blog like Stellenberg, EG, Garsies, Helpies

    ReplyReply
  5. @Hooit: I see, wasn’t trying to be funny, but SACS, Dale, Wynberg, Grey Bloem, Maritzburg College who are all over 150 years old and started playing late 1800’s would be my traditional rugby schools. Schools started playing around 1910 onwards probably also traditional. Any school started after 1960 for me is a new school hence not traditional yet. It’s subjective but for me a 90 year old school and older is traditional.

    ReplyReply
  6. @Grasshopper: I will rephrase ‘traditional’ in brackets. From my own experience if you think rugby performing, 1ste to mind schools, over the past 15 years, etc Grey Bloem, PRG, Monnas, Affies, Boyshaai, Paarl Gim. I think you know what I refer to.

  7. @Beet thank you thank you thank you!!! Hopefully we wont have to read all the sob stories anymore and we can get back to SBR.
@Hooit see you could not wait to mention that Helpies got a drawing to welcome them and not test them. Later on I see that you corrected yourself. All seem to believe that if you do not play against PBH or Grey Bloem or Paul Roos then you have a easy match.
It sound to me that Helpies will maybe play two of them at St Johns. This might be the reason why they did not match them up on Wildeklawer. Dont know just tacking a wild stab.
Also do not consider Selborne as a easy match.

    ReplyReply
  8. Personally think that Boland Landbou got the toughest draw of all the teams. Sure they’ll be up to it though.

    ReplyReply
  9. @Hooit: I get your drift, traditional Top 10 schools. I think SACS should be there, they running a great rugga program with small numbers.

    ReplyReply
  10. @Hooit: Firstly! Congrats and good luck to all the invitees. Hooit, I agree with you that the match between Grey Bloem and Paarl Gim, is the pick of the lot. However! there is still a number of tantalising fixtures. Thiis includes Affies vs. Paul Roos , Glenwood (world champs) vs. Boishaai (SA champs), Monnas vs. Oakdale etc.

Having said the above, I do feel that we can only speculate at the strength of the various schools at this early stage ,and as you mentioned, surprises/shocks are highly possible.

I also expect newbies Stellenberg to make a statement in 2017. They have some talented players and have strengthened their coaching staff with the appointment of Corne Kannemeyer, who this season was the coach of Brackenfell (who won the unofficial WP Premier B title, having defeated Stellenberg in the process).

  11. @Riempies: I think from Monnas experience this year we played both teams you are playing. The result was 1 draw and 1 win with 5(If I remember correctly) . I had the 2 posts to illustrate my initial thinking when I 1ste saw the program about a week ago and like I explained above. Speartackle created an expectation with his dream/wishful matchups for Helpies. Alot depend on the strenght of their current u16’s. Like Kattes mentioned it is still early so pure speculation at this point. On current form you should win both. PS – It is actually a compliment for Helpies.

    ReplyReply
  12. @Kattes-Strofes: just to be clear Glenwood are NOT World Champs, they SANIX champs which included invited teams from around the world, very different. Glenwood never claimed to be World Champs. The team that went included many 2nd team & under16 players. Glenwood will be competitive…

  13. @Hooit: Nou hoe nou? Miskien is my engils nie so goed nie! “Also seems like Helpies got ‘welcomed’ into Wildeklawer with 2 games to settle them and not test them after a big season this year.”
My verblyf is gebook en my motor alreeds vol petrol.

Sover my kennis strek het hulle nog nooit so n toets jaar gehad nie.

  15. Based on this year’s rankings and n little maths with 0% opinion the following 5 schools have the toughest fixture list at Wildeklawer 2017.
1-Boland, 2-Selborne, 3-Grey Bloem, 4-Glenwood and 5-Waterkloof. (Both opponents rankings are on average the highest)
Using the same criteria the school with the easiest games is EG.
I know this counts for nothing as this year’s ranking will be different next year but I think EG would have preferred at least 1 top 10 team and Boland is in for a tough tournament.

    ReplyReply
  16. @Hooit: EG, if going to Kearsney Festival, will be tested there for sure. Expect another big pack & hard running backs from EG!

    ReplyReply
  17. EG Jansen should have a powerful team again in 2017 as they were Beeld trophy champs in 2015 as under 16’s. But they have a hectic schedule in 2017. Wildeklawer, Kearsney and Noord-Suid, Tuks series and Beeld seems to be on the cards

    ReplyReply
  18. The true strength of E G Jansen will become clear during the Noord/Suid tournament. They will have to bring their A game long before Wildeklawer. Playing Noord-Suid and Kearsney before Wildeklawer will be a big ask.

  19. If Affies is not playing any of the 2 Paarl schools at WK then that would mean we must be playing one of them elsewhere.
Like at one of the Easter Schools Rugby Festivals prior to WK.
We usually play PRG @ St John’s, now we meet at WK.
Let’s wait for these fixtures from all the Festivals,

    ReplyReply
En dit lyk of Affies teen Paarl Bois Haai by St Johns gaan speel

    ReplyReply
  21. @RugbyFun: That is a serious trek for both schools each year. Glenwood now have annual derbies vs Menlopark and Waterkloof instead of Affies and Michaelhouse.

    ReplyReply
  22. @Hooit: Yep, Glenwood have one seriously tough fixture list next year.

    1) DHS Rugby Festival – warm-up
    2) KZN Development – warm-up
    3) Kearsney Festival – probably Selborne
    4) Kearsney Festival – probably EG Jansen
    5) Kearsney Festival – probably Dale College
    6) Westville (Home)
    7) Garsfontein – Wildeklawer
    8) Boishaai – Wildeklawer
    9) Kearsney (Away)
    10) Menlopark (Home)
    11) DHS (Away)
    12) Monnas (Home)
    13) Framesby (Away)
    14) Maritzbirg College (Home)
    15) Irish Schools team
    16) Waterkloof (Home)
    17) Grey Bloem (Away)

  23. @Hooit: I know it’s on rankings in different years, but I don’t agree with your calculations on who is facing the toughest opposition. I agree with Boland, but there’s no difference between Glenwood(9) playing 14 and 1 and Oakdale(13) playing 14 and 5.

One thing is for sure, there’s going to be surprises. Again on different years but I think Monnas and Affies might feel save but might be surprised.

  24. @Rugby Fun: Now how do you know all of this ? Flippen amazing news…
The annual reversing fixture with Paarl Gim !!!
It is very early in the season to play each other but still I agree with this fixture. Very important for both schools to compete annually. We must actually extend our stay while we down there and play another school. 2 Birds – 1 stone scenario! Like Boland Landbou or SACS…
What’s very sad is not playing Glenwood anymore.
Is this all about that banter that started after a previous fixture between the schools ? Silly if it is I think. Maybe Beet knows more on this ?

  25. @Ooorkant Loftus: A few Affies bloggers and trolls said it was down to heated games, off the ball tactics and parents not enjoying the hosting. Not sure what is the truth, but Glenwood are known for very well mannered boys. There will obviously be a few rabble rousers and bad eggs, but generally I thought games were played in good spirit. It could be down to wanting stronger opposition. Glenwood honestly only provided some resistance at A team level. I would love to know the truth…

  28. I am now going to put my neck on the line with the following statement do do not take it personally. My prediction for next year for the top teams are: Boishigh-NAG (Not as good as this year). Paarlgim-Same. Grey Bloem-Better. Affies-Same. Paul Roos-NAG. Monnas-Better. Helpmekaar-NAG. Garsfontein-NAG. EG-NAG. Menlo and Waterkloof-Better. Jeppe-NAG. Rustenburg-NAG. Glenwood-Better. This assumption is purely based on the players leaving the school and u16 team strenght moving into senior rugby. For example Boishigh will not have a lock as good as Moerat next year. Let me know what you think.

    ReplyReply
  29. @Hooit: Very interesting thought Hooit, and I tend to agree with you on all. Menlo and Klofies can only do better. No way they could go lower. Menlo shall be better next year, but I expect them to be much better in 2018.

    ReplyReply
  30. Almost forgot. Eldoraigne-Better. Nelspruit-Not Sure. I must also add that I do not know all the players at senior level next year so I could be way off the mark. Another example is Papier in Garsfontein. Even if the whole team stays the same except for Papier they will not be as good. The difference may be that they are 98% this year and 96% next year.

    ReplyReply
  31. @Hooit: Glenwood can only be better than the hidings we took from Monnas and Affies, thank goodness Monnas will be at home :-)

    ReplyReply
  32. @Hooit: I’d be surprised if Helpemekaar is NAG, as their current g11s were their dream teams at u14/15/16 level. Weren’t they ranked at 2 when they were u16 in 2015?

    ReplyReply
  33. @Vleis: I agree but my opinion were based on one or 2 key grade 12’s leaving and the incoming player is not at the same level and this year u/17 group provided good quality depth and I do not think they are goibg to have the same deprh or reserwe strength next year.

    ReplyReply

    ReplyReply
  35. @Vleis: @Hooit: Helpies reserve strength will come from matrics. Never been an issue of depth through the age groups. Only but a few gr 11 players will make the 1XV squad purely because as individuals they are very good players. Perhaps one or two will earn a place in the starting 15. The rest will make a competitive 2nd team. If you played them during the age groups you would know that they would welcome a game or two against the traditional rugby schools, especially aginst Boishaai and Grey College as those are just amazing boys schools who demand so much respect. By the way, Helpies are almost 100 years young with a trophy or two to show for it. I’ll give you my opinion on your list soon – should be fun.

    ReplyReply
  36. @Hooit, @Vleis, @Quagga: comments on form next year very relative. Teams mentioned as NAG may move up or down the rankings and “better” teams may not do well at all.
@Hooit: alternative comments, in a similar vein, can be made about Monnas next year. They probably NAG because bulk of players from this year’s gr11’s, who rode on the backs of the grade 12’s, are really just OK benefitting from very biased Lions coaching and selection staff. Your u16’s this year played hard, fast rugby but have very few good decision-makers. Then, you also have a new coach, who may be capable, but will he and “the culture” gel? Then they may also be better, but will a little bit more be good enough?

  85. @Speartackle: I believe all boishaai supporters acknowledge the winning streak is over regardless of International/National status of loss. I personally think its gone. Yes we can go unbeaten nationally if its said so but if you lose you lose. This was the train of thought before the tour and now. I saw it the same with regard to Newlands clash if you lose that particular team has beaten you but the rules are different at Newlands they say so not counted. This is because there’s no kicks at posts and 25 min a side. The same can be said about the Christchurch match. Christchurch practiced rolling subs and the substituted flyhalf came back onto the field after a penalty was given post final hooter blasted to slot a winning goal. I know Boishaai played the match as regular season game but not the opposition it was a pre season warm-up to them and there was plenty of discussion points. But they claim the victory regardless of the pre match banter that this is a pre season match and doesn’t count in their eyes. So lets just leave it as a loss and in future make sure that every match is known status before the match in both teams eyes. I for 1 believe same statement could have been made had we sent a Boishaai XV and not our HJS1st XV to NZ!

  88. @Speartackle: I do think this boishaai team can go to Grey weekend unbeaten. The Grey game is 50/50! Then the PRG game will be exciting……unfortunately all these things are out of our hands. The tour was a commitment as early as end of 2013 season as far as I know but i saw 2017 tour shirts in 2014 when I bought a wors roll at a Brug street match. I wanted the team going over to be a Boishaai XV so that exactly this could be avoided. I am a MX16 parent so I was hoping the Bois would have the beginning of the season to build on assault of Bloem. In Christchurch match I was receiving updates on whatsapp……within 15min Christchurch scored 28 points! A few comments by those alongside the field exclaimed something in progress but will never know the full truth. We have to move on but we have to look at teams leaving our shores and touring places like this! Obviously SANIX is high profile and official. If you look at commentary by NZ public there was a national outcry that the teams losing in first 4 matches was just plain wrong and teams were testing out their combinations and they didn’t regard any of the games any more than pre season warm ups. They knew the Christchurch match was our last and I can only fill in the dots for myself what transpired in order for us to leave their shores with NZ pride intact!!!!

  96. Gim’s coaching structures have improved by leaps and bounds over the last few years. This goes for all teams and age groups. The first results for the lower age groups are very encouraging. At under 14 and 15 level Gim beat PR quite convincingly. Due to the size of the school (540 boys – only Landbou and Oakdale have fewer boys in the Western Cape) Gim struggled in the past to compete with the bigger Boys’schools at a lower level, but this will change in future.

I put it through photo shop to clear in up into to current writing check out what the Editor has to say really from a different time.

Aliwal North Rugby RFC – Aliwal Weekly Post
    12 June 1937
A great day was had by all Gentleman and accompanying ladies at the opening of the new Aliwal North Rugby RFC. Great fare and fun was had by all on this chilly June day and great bravado was shown by all footballers on the day showing that rugby football was well and alive on the Orange River.
Two games were played in the afternoon firstly was a game between two up standing schools who had son’s from this area of the North East Cape all youngsters of fine repute and manners, these schools represtendent were Grey College of Bloemfontein and Queens College from the frontier town of Queenstown and this was the 9 recorded RFG between the institutions of fine young lads.
The second game was between Aliwal Rugby RFC and Burgersdorp RFC which was for the NEC Cup which was previously won by Burgersdorp in 1934. All these young farmers and townsman were proud and upright and of families of great heritage in this area. The referee was Aliwal Town Clerk Freddie Durandt.
All the football was played in good spirit and in the first game Queens came away with a 6-3 win in a game that was marked by the Queens outback who was tall and straggly but when he got galloping it looked like nothing could stop him beside’s the mighty Orange River some one mile away and if he had manage to navigate that who knows were he would have stopped. It was only his inability to handle the ball that saved the Grey young fellow’s more time under the bars.
The main match was dominated by some hefty fellow’s from Burgersdorp who were far too powerful and cunning for the friends from the Orange River, and the men from Aliwal were left huffing and puffing around the newly planted fodder. A final push from the tall timber of Burgersdorp gave them a runaway 15 to none victory. The Burgersdorp kicker was on fine form and had the public and all looking for balls far and wide in the surrounding area’s every time he clobbered the leather.

Dieselfde besering as my klong.

  160. By the way ! Where has all the Hoppers gone? Your team is performing well again, but your remarks are missing. The blog is not the same without Grassy and his mates, ou Bog and that Rom! Rom ! Rom ! blogger from Gimmies. The match between Glenwood and Boishaai must surely be emotional for Boishaai,s Sean Erasmus. He played a leading role in the resurgance of the Green Machine, and coached the first team for a good number of years.

  161. @Speartackle: Goeie vraag, Spiesie !

  165. It see that both HJS and Waterkloof 2nd teams are attending as well, actually playing each other on Saturday. Is this a new development, or might the organizers be contemplating something similar to North-South in the future. Nice to have 46 players available though.

  166. @jakes: Monnas had to make place for Supersport rugby challenge Leopards vs Griquas which will be played on the A field. Griquas wanted to let the adults play infront of a full pavilion for once.

  171. @BuiteBreek: mens moet die beste span kies of dit pienk pers wit swart bruin of blou is….

  172. @Smallies: Naand Smallies. My seun was tot laasjaar by Grey.
Jy is reg. Die bestes word gekies. Almal kry ‘n kans. Op gelyke voet. Sonder windowdressing of politieke korrektheid.
Grey praat nie veel nie. Grey doen dit net.

Geniet jou seuns se tyd by Grey. Dis verby in ‘n vlietende oomblik.
